Rack Pack rise after basement battle

Week three of the South London & Kent Pool Alliance summer season and there was a battle at the bottom of Tier Two East, as Eltham Terrace Rack Pack in seventh travelled to bottom team Rugrats.

Both teams were looking for their first victory of the season and had two and one point respectively, so something had to give.

Rugrats started strong, whitewashing the first set, 5-0 including a break and dish by Mark Knevett.

Rack Pack fought back, with Chris Parlett and Chris Unwin winning the first two frames of the second set.

Steve Gibson and Dylan Suggars levelled the set, before Andy Mounger won the deciding frame of the set for Rack Pack.

One all in sets going into the final set, but Rugrats were, 7-3 up in frames and were looking for one more for the bonus point.

Tony Frost won the eleventh frame, and the comeback was on.

Chris Unwin pulled it back to, 7-5 giving Rack Pack a, 2-0 lead in the set.

Mounger won frame thirteen to give Rack Pack the victory, 2-1 in sets and bring them to within a frame.

The bonus point was still up for grabs and Rugrats’ Captain, Steve Gibson secured it, with Aaron Shephard increasing the overall score to, 9-6.

After going, 5-0 down Rack Pack fought hard and played well to get their two points, but the first set whitewash did the damage and they had to share the points.

Chris Unwin won both of his frames for Rack Pack, but the Rugrats’ Captain Gibson went one better with an unbeaten hat-trick.

Rack Pack’s two points lifted them two places to fifth, whereas Rugrats remain bottom however, they are only one point behind their opponents.

Bexleyheath Working Men’s Club and Bellegrove Flyers find themselves in between Rugrats and Rack Pack, having both lost this week.

Flyers were well beaten by Bears, 3-0 & 10-5 which sent them to the top of the table.

Newly formed Hurricane Hustlers travelled to Bexleyheath looking to build on last week’s narrow victory.

Hurricanes got off to a flyer, winning the first set, 4-1 with the set highlight being Michelle Brown’s accomplished frame.

The second set saw frames go back and forth, with Stuart Yard winning his first frame in the seventh however, Bexleyheath were fighting hard and secured the set, 3-2.

Solid frames from Alfie Southby, Kevin England and Simon Byrne in the first three frames of the third set secured it and the match for Hurricanes, before Bexleyheath fought back to take the last two frames, making the final score, 2-1 & 9-6 to Hurricanes.

It was a great team effort from Hurricanes, with Simon Byrne, Alfie Southby and Michelle Brown winning two of their three frames, and Kevin England scoring an unbeaten brace.

However, Bexleyheath’s Dave Faulkes was the star of the show with an unbeaten hat-trick.

This result has lifted Hurricanes to the dizzy heights of third in their first season, but they are five points behind Duke of Northumberland, who beat Bell Ya Later, 2-1 & 9-6.

Over in SLKPA Tier Two West there are no unbeaten teams, as both Eltham Terrace Nuthouse and Gun Pit went down this week.

Nuthouse remain top despite losing to Bellegrove A, 3-0 & 11-4 in a match where the run of the balls went Bellegrove’s way.

The first two frames were shared, but Jack Taylor and Petrina Pearce won the next two to give Bellegrove the set, before Leighton Aston won frame five to bring Nuthouse back to within a frame at, 3-2.

Bellegrove won the first four frames of the second set, giving them a, 2-0 set lead and were on the hill looking for the bonus point.

Once again Aston was the saviour for Nuthouse, taking frame ten to avoid the set whitewash and prevent Bellegrove from gaining the bonus point before the third set.

Nuthouse couldn’t hold out for too long though, as Peter Moult won frame eleven to give his team an unassailable, 8-3 lead.

Jack Taylor and Petrina Pearce won the next two frames to give Bellegrove the third set and maximum points.

Yet again, Nuthouse had Aston to thank for preventing the set whitewash, achieving his hat-trick in the process.

Bellegrove Captain, John Skuza took the last frame to give his side another, 4-1 set victory.

Aston was the only hat-trick hero for Nuthouse, but Bellegrove had three, Skuza and Taylor, with Pearce achieving that feat for the second week in a row.

A special mention must also go to Richard Hattersley and Alan Hunt, who were both unlucky not to pick up a victory on their debuts for Bellegrove.

Bellegrove have overtaken Gun Pit into second, as they were beaten, 2-1 & 10-5 by New Eltham New Boys.

This means the top three teams are all on eight points, only separated by frames won, with only four frames between them.

At the bottom of the table, the bottom two faced each other, as Downham Tavern Terrors hosted Farmhouse, who were the narrow victors, 2-1 & 9-6 to open up a three-point gap over their opponents.

The remaining game in the division was extremely close, as it generally is between Academicals and Fox & Hounds.

It was so close that the points were shared, as Academicals won, 2-1 in sets but Fox scored more frames, 8-7.

In the top division Sharks stay top of the SLKPA Elite League with an impressive and hard-fought victory over Terry’s Allstars, 2-1 & 9-6 with Allstars dropping from third to fifth as a result.

After losing to them last week, Hotshots replace Allstars in third, after a notable, 3-0 & 12-3 triumph over The Cocked Hats.

In between Sharks and Hotshots, in second are Bellegrove, who are having an incredible season, beating New Eltham New Stars, 2-1 & 11-4 this week to remain unbeaten.

The game started in spectacular fashion with New Star, Dave Jandu winning the first frame with a break and dish, which was followed by another one by Bellegrove’s Dec Kelly in the next frame.

The next two frames were also shared and at, 2-2 Peter Whyte missed a difficult black up the rail and the first set slipped away from Bellegrove.

Some very good pool followed, particularly from Bellegrove, as they took the next nine frames to secure the remaining two sets and the bonus point.

Dec Kelly completed his hat-trick and James Couch won the two frames he actually had a shot in.

Cocked Hats and New Stars are both still looking for their first win of the season and so are Falconwood Club, after they were beaten by Pickwick this week.

Pickwick got off to a great start, winning the first four frames, before Jamie White prevented the set whitewash.

Ian Stringer put two in a row for Falconwood to halve Pickwick’s lead to, 4-2.

However, Paul Gafa, Paul Slater, Martin Storey and Jamie Davis all won their second frame of the night to give Pickwick the set and the bonus point.

Stringer made it two out of three to bring Falconwood back to, 8-3 then Mike Werbowy tied the set.

White nudged Falconwood back into the lead in the set, with his second win out of three, but Slater recorded his hat-trick to tie the set.

Storey also scored a hat-trick to give Pickwick maximum points with a, 3-0 & 11-4 triumph.

Pickwick put in an impressive display, and there were some great finishes from many of the players, with Captain Paul Slater scoring three out of three and he was joined by Martin Storey, with Paul Gafa also unbeaten on two frame wins.

Falconwood remain bottom, whereas Pickwick have gone up to fourth, three points behind the league leaders.
