A cue is like an extension to your arm for many players. Some people keep their's for years while others replace them every 6 months. How long have you owned your current cue?

A Team Match Report: London vs Berkshire 01/02/09

Inter CountyLondon A team got off to a very satisfactory start to the season, with a 29-15 home win over Berkshire.

The visitors came with perhaps not the strongest side we've ever seen from them, but also far from the weakest. Any team with the quality of Brad Robinson, Rob Uzzell, and the Sabharwal brothers is going to be dangerous if you give them the chance.

London got off to a flying start though, taking a deserved 6-0 lead which turned into 8-3 at the end of the first set.

Berkshire rallied well, taking the second set 6-5 thanks to their own good play as well as a few slips on our part. This was now a situation where last year I felt we all might have let our heads drop, so it was very encouraging to see the spirit of the team as we in turn rallied, to register more 8-3 wins in the 3rd and 4th sets. It's very difficult to do better than that at this level.

Jerry Tickell and Sean Halligan were both unlucky to lose their final frames to miss out on a clean sweep, and were joined on 3/4 by Danny Miller. But London stalwarts Dean Wisher and Ramesh Gokhul both played superbly to register 4 out of 4.

But man of the match has to be Rob Southey who hardly put a foot wrong all day, and claimed the unusual record of 5 wins out of 4!

Rob's final frame started with a dry break from Rob Uzzell which Rob (our one) dished up. But it was agreed to re-start the frame due to a refereeing mix-up (spotted at the start of that dish... it seems like no-one felt like stopping Rob in full flow which is understandable because he's entertaining to watch when in this form).

So Rob U broke again, came up dry again, and Rob S dished again, this second version including a simply sick shot where he was as good as straight on a long shot down the rail and somehow managed to blast the ball in and create the angle needed to get the white away from the cushion.

Shot of the match would probably be between that and last years's Region 7 player of the year Jack Pople's tricky off-straight three ball plant, where he also needed to get the cue ball in and out of baulk to land on his last colour; a shot which was all the more impressive given the pressure of playing his third frame having lost the first 2.

With last year's regional winners Surrey only managing a draw in Hampshire, and Kent winning 26-18 in Sussex, this result means we start the season back on top of the league. With more performances like this we should be able to stay there, but I've a feeling that there could be more surprises than usual this year, and the table as a whole could end up tighter.

Next game is away to Kent on March 22nd.

well done to jerry tickell. moved up from the B's to the A's and was unlucky not to get 4/4 in his first match.
so many people underestimate jerry , probably down to his slow style of play , but the man get the shots and gets the results. i liken him to etienne wagner who many people say he's not that good due to his style of play , then they hand over the money. lol

I watched the end of Jerry's last frame and have to admit it scared the pants off me how close he was coming to time fouls! Great effort though - well done Smiling

Just like to say that I really enjoyed the match, and felt like I had plenty of support from the rest of the team, particularly Rob, who had the dubious pleasure of timekeeping my frames! Also felt less pressure than I expected, mainly because playing in a team with so much ability I felt that even if I did screw up we'd still win. Nice to come on at 7 v 2 up!
