LATEST MATCH REPORTS...
London C bt Sussex C 24-20

After disappointment in Reading it was good to get back to winning ways at home to struggling Sussex, but we shouldn’t take too much comfort from this win. For sure, we had players missing but even so, form would have suggested a more comfortable victory. Having said that, the final score is a tad misleading, because even though the game started off pretty evenly, with not much to call in it after the opening exchanges, we always managed to stay that bit ahead, and then a bit more, until we finally clinched the match at the relatively comfortable stage of 23-12. We should have had our eyes on a really big win to put the pressure on the league leaders Berkshire, but eased up after crossing the winning line to let the Sussex boys back in for a late run. Let’s hope that does not come back to haunt us when the final tally is done.
Performances were solid. There were no 4s but then again there were no 0s either. Kevin Dempsey, Mark Hester, Shane Hutley and Peter McCafferty all did very well to get 3/4. Michael Bonney, Tony Gear, Darren O’Byrne, Jeremy Ruffer and Alex Stones all got 2/4. Bruno Silva and Paul Williams both under-achieved with 1/4. Shane, as well as hitting a welcome return to form, made his second break-and-dish of this county campaign, so well done to him for that.
Some good news for us is that without potting a ball we closed the gap on Berkshire before this match, as they were docked points for fielding an unregistered player against us. The player in question won 2 from 2 so both these frames were reversed in our favour, which is why the Berkshire result now stands at 25-19. We really have to make sure we carry on playing steadily but apply the killer instinct when we need to against Surrey down in Croydon on June 20th. As ever I expect players to make themselves available and let me know in good time if they are not. We will also be expecting all players to have paid up their subs at that match – I will be letting each of you know how much if anything is outstanding from you. By the way, if you are one of the players who signed up for the team at the start of the season but has dropped off for whatever reason, you should know you will still be expected to pay your subs in full.
We just about squeezed a team of our own on Sunday and this was a home game, but I expect to have a couple of the no-shows back for the next match. Let’s pull out something special and achieve the double against our old rivals from Surrey! Finally, warm congratulations to my vice-captain Patrick for getting a very respectable 3 from 4 on his debut for the B team.
