A cue is like an extension to your arm for many players. Some people keep their's for years while others replace them every 6 months. How long have you owned your current cue?

Winter 2021-22 week 9 match reports

Duke of Northumberland whitewash Happy Hustlers

The South London & Kent Pool Alliance has reached the winter break and Duke of Northumberland have sent the Happy Hustlers into Christmas without the smiles on their faces after whitewashing them, 15-0 this week.

Duke are currently top of the second division, with Hustlers fifth, 38 points behind them and the gulf showed in this match.

There was a hat-trick of hat-trick heroes for the victors, with Paul Clements, Phil Tworek and John Cochrane all winning their three frames.

This win puts Duke fifteen points clear at the top and are the first team in the SLKPA to break through 100 points this season, scoring 101.

Similarly, Hustlers are now fifteen points ahead of Bexleyheath Working Men’s Club at the bottom, after they were beaten, 9-6 by second place Bellegrove Flyers.

Bexleyheath have recently added some new players to their squad, which has lifted their spirits and given them some strength in depth, so who knows, they might be making up those fifteen points and lifting themselves off the bottom.

Third played fourth, as Academicals hosted Farmhouse and the home team increased the gap between them to 21 points, after winning, 9-6 this week.

Falconwood Club remain top of SLKPA Division One after an emphatic, 12-3 triumph over third placed New Eltham New Stars.

Falconwood raced into a, 3-0 lead, before Steve Knight won frame four for New Stars, but Falconwood won the next nine frames in succession to go, 12-1 ahead.

Highlights of this run of frames were some good clearances from Ian Stringer and Dave Selby and a break and dish from Ross Webster in frame twelve.

New Stars made the score a little more respectable by winning the last two frames.

As well as their great clearances and break and dish, Stringer, Selby, and Webster all won each of their three frames.

Falconwood are now eighteen points clear at the top of the table, whereas New Stars have dropped to fourth, after Fox & Hounds beat New Stars sister side, New Eltham New Boys.

There were only two points between the two sides, sitting in fourth and fifth however, Fox’s 10-5 triumph lifted them into third place, whereas New Boys have sunk to the bottom of the table.

New Boys replaced Eltham Terrace Rack Pack at the bottom after they managed a fantastic, 8-7 victory over second placed Bellegrove A.

This was a great game played in a good spirit, with Bellegrove suffering only their second defeat of the season so far.

Bellegrove won the first two sets by the same, 3-2 score line, giving them a, 6-4 lead going into the final set.

But that’s where it started to fall apart for Bellegrove, as only Petrina Pearce troubled the scorers in the final set, giving it to Rack Pack, 4-1 which in turn gave them the match by 8 frames to 7.

Stacy Redman and Peter Moult both won two of their three frames for Bellegrove, but Adam Watts went one better for Rack Pack with an unbeaten hat-trick.

Falconwood and Bellegrove A appear to be favourites for promotion, with a nine-point gap between second and third however, it is incredibly close between the remaining four teams, with just seven points separating all of them.

The Premier Division is still being heavily affected by postponements due to Covid, so the table is a bit jumbled at present.

Hotshots did manage to catch up on one of their postponed matches, beating Bellegrove, 8-7 but this week’s fixture against Eltham Terrace Nuthouse was postponed.

This leaves Hotshots still unbeaten in fifth, with Nuthouse second from bottom.

Bellegrove did manage to play their fixture this week, but they only had four players against Pickwick.

Pickwick took the opening two frames, which included the bye, before Dec Kelly put one on the board for Bellegrove, which turned out to be the frame that prevented the first set whitewash, as Martin Storey and Jason Verillo won the last two frames of the set.

The first four frames of the second set were shared, swinging one way then the other, then the Bellegrove’s lack of players proved costly, giving Verillo the frame and Pickwick the set.

Pickwick were on the hill going into set three and Jamie Davis gave them the win with frame eleven.

Kelly and Graham Levingbird pulled Bellegrove back to, 8-5 before Paul Slater and Paul Gafa put Pickwick into double figures, making it, 10-5.

This was an important win for the Pickwick, where most frames were scrappy, but Pickwick nicked the important ones.

There was only one unbeaten player on the night, Pickwick’s Jamie Davis who won both the frames he played and had a bye, giving him a hat-trick.

This may have been deemed as a surprise result, but even more of a surprise was Rugrats beating The Cocked Hats.

Rugrats took a shock, 4-0 lead before George Taylor put Cocked Hats first frame on the board and prevented the first set whitewash.

Taylor made it two in a row, with frame six and Nick Steadman pulled Cocked Hats back to within one frame.

Rugrats’ Captain Steve Gibson and Pat Firth tied the set and restored Rugrats three frame advantage at, 6-3.

George Covington took frame ten to give Cocked Hats the set and bring them back to, 6-4.

Aaron Shephard, Ian Cruwys and Ashley Hewson won the first three frames of the final set to not only give them the set but also the match.

Paul Donohoe and Steve Dixon took the last two frames, making the final score, 9-6 in Rugrats favour.

The Cocked Hats may have felt that Rugrats had luck on their side, but the Rugrats feel that it is about time and their Captain felt they played extremely well.

Sharks stay top despite having their match against Bull Tavern postponed.

At present only thirteen points separate the top seven teams, but as teams have played between six and eight matches the table won’t be a true reflection until it evens itself out.
