A Team Report: Hampshire 21 - London 23
Hampshire 'A' 21 - London 'A' 23
12th September2010,
Portsmouh
This was a bit of a weird one, but a deserved and hard-earned win in the end.
The way it started, we might have hoped for more. But at the end of the day too many of us (myself included) had a bad one.
The start saw 4 break and dishes in a row on table 1. First Jack Pople, then Rob Chalmers, then Chris Snyman for us, and with Jamie Fay and Joe Prince winning on table 2 we were 5-nil up. But the 4th of those break and dishes was against Tony Bailey, and started a run of 7 consecutive lost frames. Somehow we were behind. It was nip and tuck for the next set then we let them get 6 in a row again in the 3rd set... only for us to respond with 6 in a row to get ourselves to 20 frames.
The three players who came up (Tony, Robbie Robb and Bri Chudasama, the last 2 of who were playing their first matches in the A team), did really well to win their final frames to clinch the win for us. This match was hardly the easiest of debuts for Robbie and Bri, but I was really pleased with them both overall. Joe's note next to Bri's final "W" on my score sheet says "Total madness"; you can read what you like into that :)
It;s hard to pick out a man of the match between Joe (who won 4 out of 4 with some typical craziness and a bit of luck), Rob (also won 4, one of them coming from a surprisingly missed black by his opponent) and Jamie (who won 3 very solid "team" frames but got dished in the one he lost), but after a bit of dithering I'm giving it to Rob for his first clean sweep in the A team.
The captain, to be frank, was utter rubbish. But to be fair to me, he wasn't the only one! Five of us only won a single frame each, and we all had good chances to get more. Let's not dwell on that but focus on a better performance overall in the next game.
Jack Pople 3/4
Joe Prince 4/4
Rob Chalmers 4/4
Jamie Fay 3/4
Chris Snyman 2/4
Tony Bailey 1/4
Darren Baker 1/4
Jerry Tickell 1/4
Rupert Ward 1/4
Robbie Robb 1/4
Bri Chudasama 2/4
